“Man working on hull of U.S. Submarine at Electric Boat Co., Groton, Conn.” By Charles Fenno Jacobs, August 1943 American workers made a staggering contribution to victory during World War II. They built 5,777 merchant ships, 1,556 naval vessels, 299,293 aircraft, 88,410 tanks, 6.5 million rifles, and 40 billion bullets. 211126-N-EJ843-0006 GROTON, Conn. (Nov. 26, 2021) Tugboats guide the Virginia-class nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine USS Minnesota (SSN 783) to the pier as it returns from a regularly-scheduled deployment. USS Minnesota was commissioned in 2013, the third U.S. Navy ship to share the name of the North Star State. The submarine Minnesota is more than 377 feet long and can displace nearly 7,900 tons.
