Revenue Commissioner

Welcome to the Hale County Revenue Commissioner web page. Here you will find information about our office and descriptions of our duties, office address, telephone numbers, and email address. Please feel free to contact us if we can be of service to you. Duties and Responsibilities This position is elected for a four-year term by the county at large. The Revenue Commissioner is responsible for the assessment, collection, and administration of ad valorem taxes. The Revenue Commissioner serves as the chief tax official of the County and performs duties formerly assigned to the Tax Assessor and Tax Collector. Statute allows the payment of real property taxes in installments as long as the first payment is at least one-half of the taxes due and is made by February 1st following the tax year for which payment is collected. Installment payments are subject to 1% per month interest on the unpaid balance for the second and third payments. The Revenue Commissioner must advertise and hold a tax sale once a year for any unpaid taxes on real estate or any special assessments. Accurate records must be kept at all times, since this office is involved in the collection of taxes that help fund a variety of government services. County Commissioners

The Hale County Commission is the governing body of the county, establishing goals and objectives to direct the county's growth and development, and carries out other responsibilities as set forth by Alabama statutes. Each Commissioner represents one of four districts and is elected within their respective district in the county. The Chairman (Probate Judge) is elected countywide. The Chairman (Probate Judge) serves a six-year term and all Commissioners serve four-year terms of office. The Commission oversees county operations and enacts ordinances and resolutions to promote the health, safety, and welfare of citizens and businesses in the county, and approves the annual budget and millage rate which funds the operations of the offices and departments under the Commission's jurisdiction. Commission Meetings The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the courtroom of the Hale County courthouse at 6:00 PM. If a regular scheduled meeting falls on a holiday, the Commission meets on the next working day following the holiday. The Commission also schedules additional meetings as they deem necessary to handle pertinent County business and in the case of emergencies. Work sessions are held the Wednesday mornings before the meeting at 9:00 AM in the Probate Judge/Commission Chambers. Both meetings and workshops are open to the public. If you wish to appear before the County Commission to discuss an important matter pertaining to the county, you must notify the Commission Office not later than noon on the Friday prior to the Tuesday meeting. Any backup information and/or exhibits pertaining to the matter you wish to discuss must be delivered to the Commission Office by the same deadline. If you have been scheduled to appear before the Commission, or if you have a matter to be discussed and you would like to have it dismissed from the agenda, please contact the Commission Office prior to the beginning of the meeting.
