Prediction Markets and Consumer Protections Under Scrutiny

Why it matters locally: While Tennessee has established regulations for sports betting, the current lack of state-level consumer protection regulations specifically for prediction markets could leave residents vulnerable to platforms that operate outside current state oversight frameworks.

Experts are observing a trend where individuals who previously faced restrictions from sports betting sites have engaged with prediction markets. These platforms allow users to bet on the outcome of future events. Prediction markets currently operate without the same state-level consumer protection regulations that apply to traditional sports betting. This regulatory difference has prompted discussion among observers regarding the oversight of these platforms and their accessibility to various user groups.
