Sussex Academy Students Create Outdoor Lunch Space
Three Sussex Academy students transformed an unused outdoor space into a classroom and lunch area adjacent to the school cafeteria.
Juniors Juno Turner and Marissa Davis and senior Caitlin Redick, all Student Government Association members, led the project that installed picnic tables and umbrellas. The space opened to seniors first and now serves all students and teachers.
"Some people have anxiety and don't want to be in the cafeteria for lunch," Marissa said. "I wanted to help others."
The idea emerged last spring. Caitlin wanted to complete a meaningful project before graduating in June, and Juno wanted to create a lasting legacy at the school. The three formed a committee, researched outdoor furniture options, and developed a proposal they brought to SGA for a vote. The measure passed, and the group allocated funds raised by SGA to purchase the selected furniture.
"Teachers appreciated it too," Juno said. "Next year, we plan to add flower pots in our school colors."
The students plan to expand the project next year and involve other school clubs in developing the outdoor space.
