A High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory are in effect for Coastal Gulf and Coastal Franklin counties, with dangerous swimming conditions and large waves expected through late Sunday.

Residents and visitors in Coastal Gulf and Coastal Franklin counties are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory now in effect. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee has issued this alert, warning of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions.

The High Rip Current Risk is in effect through late Sunday night, October 11. Concurrently, a High Surf Advisory is active from 11 AM EDT /10 AM CDT/ Friday, October 9, until 11 AM EDT /10 AM CDT/ Sunday, October 11. Large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet are expected in the surf zone.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. These conditions may also lead to localized beach erosion.
