Storm Surge Watch Issued for Coastal Franklin, Life-Threatening Flooding Possible
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Coastal Franklin County, warning of potential life-threatening flooding and hazardous winds from Friday morning to Saturday morning. Residents should prepare for evacuations and protect property now.
Coastal Franklin County is now under a Storm Surge Watch, issued October 7 at 2:09 PM EDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, FL. This alert signifies the potential for life-threatening storm surge flooding of 3 to 5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas, including Apalachicola, Eastpoint, Carrabelle, and Alligator Point.
Residents in these areas should finalize storm surge preparations immediately and be ready to evacuate if orders are issued. Failure to heed evacuation orders could be life-threatening. The window of concern for this storm surge is from Friday morning until Saturday morning.
In addition to storm surge, hazardous winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected, with a potential for winds reaching 39-57 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now to minimize limited damage to porches, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Scattered power outages are possible.
Heavy rainfall is also anticipated, with 4-8 inches and locally higher amounts, posing a significant threat of moderate flooding. Prepare for potential evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings.
