Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Harris County; Prepare for High Winds, Flooding, Tornadoes
Harris County is under a Tropical Storm Watch starting Thursday evening, with residents urged to prepare for high winds, moderate flooding, and the potential for multiple tornadoes through early Friday morning.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Harris County, including Hamilton, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA, effective Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 5:17 PM EDT. The watch is set to expire on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 1:30 AM EDT.
Residents in Harris County should act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind, moderate flooding rain, and the potential for several tornadoes. Peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to outdoor property, downed tree limbs, and scattered power outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Anticipate 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, leading to potential moderate flooding. Be prepared for possible evacuations and rescues, and heed all flood watches and warnings. Rivers and small streams may overflow their banks. Driving conditions may become hazardous with road closures.
The situation is favorable for tornadoes. Emergency plans should include preparation for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings; if a warning is issued, shelter quickly.
