The Destin-Fort Walton Beach Tourism Tourist Development Department (TDD) enhances Okaloosa County's economy and environment, benefiting residents and visitors. Tourism Director Jennifer Adams leads the TDD's efforts to make time spent in the county more valuable.
Tourism creates jobs, boosts sales and infrastructure taxes, and increases small business revenue in Okaloosa County. The TDD funds tourism amenities, activities, and environmental improvements within the countywide tourist development district. Local residents contribute through hospitality and by offering authentic recommendations to visitors.
The TDD's mission is to promote the area and increase visitation through targeted marketing campaigns. The department oversees Visitor Welcome and Adventure Centers, the Convention Center, Fairgrounds and Events Center, the Baker Recreation and Equestrian Center, and the Film Commission.
Beach safety is a key TDD responsibility, including funding the Beach Safety Life Saving Program and supporting lifeguards. The department also provides special event funding and conducts program evaluations. Environmental protection initiatives include funding the artificial reef program, public beach access parks, beach cleanup, restoration improvements, and Sea Turtle Conservation.
The TDD is funded by a 6% lodging tax on short-term rentals in Okaloosa County, including hotels, motels, apartments, condominiums, and campgrounds for terms of six months or less. The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners levies this tax under Florida Statute 125.0104. Okaloosa County Ordinances established the Tourist Development Council (TDC) to advise the Board of County Commissioners on tax collection and special taxing districts. The TDC's upcoming meeting agenda is publicly available.
