Fort Myers Beach Budget Faces Deficit

FORT MYERS BEACH – The Town of Fort Myers Beach faces a proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget with a $299,900 deficit. Town officials presented the tentative budget, which relies on significant cost controls and potential fee increases to achieve balance.

Key adjustments include freezing 8.08 General Fund positions, reclassifying positions to Non-General Funds, and setting a revised millage rate of 1.0655. The budget allocates no additional funds for studies, the emergency fund, reserves, or bridge loan repayment. Cost controls aim to offset mandatory increases, including a reduction in contributions to the Emergency Fund.

To close the $299,900 deficit, town leaders are considering fee increases or further cuts. The budget proposes bringing the Bay Oaks Pool back online, an expense exceeding the net revenue growth. Ad valorem tax and parking revenue growth will largely fund a bridge loan step-down and reduced interest income.

Deputy Town Manager Dr. Traci Kohler, Acting Finance Director Carolyn Luomala, and Assistant Finance Director Jeffrey Newman outlined the budget's framework during a hearing on September 9, 2026. The proposed FY27 budget is nearly balanced but requires further adjustments for fiscal health.

The budget proposal aligns with the Town's vision of a "thriving eclectic coastal community" and its mission to serve and protect by fostering safety, sustainability, and economic vitality. The recommended millage rate of 1.0655, below the 1.34 ceiling, will only bring the town near balance, not to a healthy reserve position. The budget does not replenish the Emergency Fund, fund grant matches, restore programming, or pay down the Bridge Loan, leaving these as outstanding obligations.
