Walton County Sheriff's Office Warns of Phone Scam Impersonating Sgt. Jeremy Fisher, Demanding $10,000

Walton County residents should remain vigilant against a sophisticated phone scam that impersonates a local sheriff's deputy. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning after a scammer, falsely claiming to be Sgt. Jeremy Fisher, attempted to defraud a resident by alleging missed federal grand jury duty and outstanding bench warrants.

This scam directly impacts local safety and financial well-being. The impersonator demanded a substantial sum of $10,000 in cash to resolve the fictitious warrants, threatening immediate arrest if the victim did not comply. Such tactics aim to pressure residents into making hasty decisions, highlighting the importance of understanding official law enforcement procedures.

The scam unfolded when the caller contacted a resident, identifying himself as 'Jeremy Fisher,' a real sergeant with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer falsely claimed the victim missed federal grand jury duty and had two bench warrants. He presented two options: surrender or pay $10,000 in cash. As the resident questioned the demands, the caller became aggressive, stating U.S. Marshals were en route. The resident, on a college campus at the time, handed her phone to a nearby law enforcement officer. That officer recognized the name of the real Sgt. Fisher and identified the call as fraudulent, causing the scammer to hang up. The scammer then contacted the initial victim's mother, attempting the same scheme.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes it never demands money, accepts cash, gift cards, or bitcoin for legal fees, or threatens immediate arrest over the phone. Residents who receive such calls should hang up immediately.
