St. Augustine Commissioner Jim Springfield Brings Decades of Education and Business Experience to Seat Five

St. Augustine Commissioner Jim Springfield’s four-year term representing Seat Five expires in December 2026, giving residents a current look at the public service career behind one of the city’s elected offices.

Springfield came to St. Johns County in 1989 after beginning his career in Gainesville as a Physical Science teacher and director of an Outdoor Education Center. After moving to the area, he owned and operated Pete’s On Vilano, a local Italian restaurant, while teaching Earth and Space Science to ninth graders at Nease High School. He also chaired the school’s School Advisory Committee.

Springfield spent more than 21 years with the St. Johns County School District. His roles included dean of students at Allen D. Nease High School, assistant principal at R.J. Murray Middle School and Sebastian Middle School, principal at Gamble Rogers Middle School and Bartram Trail High School, and associate superintendent for the district. He retired from the school district in 2011.

In 2017, Springfield joined the Flagler College faculty and created the college’s first Human Resources Department. He served as benefits coordinator and employee relations coordinator and joined the college President’s Cabinet. His community work has included the St. Augustine Historic Kiwanis Club, the United Way Board of Trustees and the St. Johns Education Foundation’s board of directors.

Springfield also serves as president of the Gamble Roger Folk Festival and the Florida section of the American Camping Association. He belongs to the Florida Association of School Administrators and the Florida Education Negotiators board. Outside those roles, he plays with the Hogtown Creek Band, works as a DJ at WFCF Flagler College Radio, and pursues hiking, camping, fishing, video production and book publishing.
