Eleven officers from the Pembroke Pines Charter High School National Honor Society, along with sponsor Jillian Palacio, attended the Broward County Honor Society fall convention Friday, Sept. 25, at Pompano Beach High School. The event allowed student leaders to connect with peers from across the county and gather ideas for their local chapters.
The convention featured a welcome breakfast and a presentation from the Broward County NHS, outlining updates and guidelines for the academic year. Attendees explored potential service projects, including initiatives focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math for elementary students and mental health awareness campaigns.
During a creative brainstorming session, PPCHS officers conceptualized a new school event with an "unlimited budget." Later, officers met in smaller groups based on their roles to discuss strategies and exchange contact information with counterparts from other schools.
Thaleia, vice president of the Deerfield Beach High School chapter, found the workshop beneficial. "This being my first time at the officers’ workshop, I really am learning a lot about what my position entails and what my job is as I speak with the other vice presidents, which is extremely beneficial," she said. "I also like how we go more in-depth on how to organize our projects, visualize things, and step out of our comfort zones."
The convention concluded at 1:30 p.m. On the return trip, the officers discussed their takeaways and held their own meeting. Mikayla Hines, senior president of the PPCHS chapter, shared her perspective: "At the officer convention, we got so many new ideas for our chapters and have many new events planned for the upcoming year. Finally, I feel that, as a board, we truly bonded, and we hope that our teamwork and planning shine through during all future NHS events."
