Bay Harbor Islands implemented a new school zone camera safety program for the 2025-2026 school year. This initiative deters speeding in school zones, a measure taken to increase safety for children and staff.

The program uses photographic enforcement to issue notices of violation to vehicle owners who exceed the posted speed limit by more than ten miles per hour. This system operates during the entirety of the school day, including 30 minutes before and after breakfast, school start, and school end times, ensuring comprehensive coverage during critical periods.

House Bill 657, a Florida law approved by Governor Ron DeSantis on May 31, 2023, authorizes the use of cameras for enforcing speeding violations in school zones. The Town of Bay Harbor Islands adopted this measure to encourage drivers to adhere strictly to posted limits.

Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8, located at 1155 93rd Street, is the designated school zone for this camera enforcement. The cameras are active during the school's operating hours, from 7:15 am to 3:35 pm, plus the additional 30-minute windows around these times.

The camera enforcement systems are configured to capture specific data as outlined by the Town of Bay Harbor Islands, with provisions for data security. Residents receive notices of violation that include the date, time, location, and photographic evidence of the infraction.
