Florida Artists Flock to Online Submissions for Art Committee

The Artwork Selection Committee, a volunteer board that enhances visual arts in Florida, saw a significant increase in artist applications after moving its submission process online. The committee's recently released FY2023 annual report highlights the shift, with over 38 applicants this year compared to an average of 12 to 15 previously.

The online system streamlined the application process for artists who live, work, study, or teach in Florida. Previously, artists submitted paper applications and thumb drives, a requirement the online portal eliminated, making it easier for local talent to showcase their work.

The committee's mission is to secure and display high-quality art, organize exhibitions featuring area artists and introduce diverse talents to the community. They aim to increase public awareness of visual arts, enhance educational and cultural opportunities, and beautify city buildings. The committee also reviews prospective art donations, commissions and purchases for exhibition in public spaces and city facilities.

Exhibitions occur at Hollywood City Hall, the Fred Lippman Multipurpose Center, and ArtsPark at Young Circle, offering free access to artwork for residents. Committee members, including Chair Jill Weisberg and Vice Chair Meaghan Kent, also collaborated with Broward County to bring the Revolving Artists program to local parks, offering workshops during events.

The Artwork Selection Committee will continue to pursue exhibitions that reflect the city's diversity, encourage artists to participate in the Art in Public Spaces program, and present exhibitions within Hollywood venues. They also plan to offer opportunities for talented students to exhibit their artwork.
