9 Hospitalized in Peoria UTV-Truck Crash Near Lake Pleasant
Peoria Fire-Medical officials responded to a head-on crash at Castle Hot Springs Road and French Creek Road around 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3, involving a pickup truck and a utility task vehicle north of Lake Pleasant. Seven occupants were in the UTV, including two adults and a juvenile driver, while the truck carried two adults; ages ranged from 16 to 48. Four victims were in critical condition, with three airlifted to hospitals, three others serious and two with minor injuries.
Blowing dust emerged as a possible factor in the collision, common in the arid West Valley terrain near Peoria's popular Lake Pleasant recreation area. Multiple agencies, including Peoria Police and fire-medical crews, coordinated the response, requesting helicopters for rapid transport amid the remote location. The popular off-road spot draws crowds for UTV riding, heightening crash risks on unpaved roads like Castle Hot Springs.
No fatalities were reported, but the incident underscores safety concerns for UTVs in Arizona's dusty backcountry. Peoria Police continue investigating the head-on impact, with no further details released Monday. Lake Pleasant, a Maricopa County hub for boating and off-roading, sees frequent weekend traffic on surrounding dirt roads.
