" Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. April 23, 2026 Greetings Ward 5! Hello friends and neighbors, The last time we connected, I was writing to you from the 2026 Main Street Now Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I’m excited to be back home and ready to put the strategies I learned into action to strengthen our social, civic, and economic well‑being right here in the city of Las Vegas. As soon as I landed in our great city, I got right to work in the community. This past week was filled with a variety of meaningful city events — from honoring those who have left their mark on the Historic Westside during the 2026 Legacy Park inductee ceremony to joining my fellow locally elected leaders at the College of Southern Nevada’s Westside Education and Training Center Community Kickoff. Here at City Hall, we held the annual Employee Values Conference, focused on providing employees with resources and sessions to support their well‑being and health. And across the community, city employees participated in this year’s Take Your Child to Work Day, giving children a chance to learn about the roles our dedicated employees play in keeping this city running. With that same spirit of progress and connection, our work continues. Be sure to check out the “Looking Ahead – Come Join Us!” section below for upcoming events and opportunities to stay engaged. Wishing you a safe, enjoyable and inspiring weekend! Warm regards, Shondra Summers-Armstrong What We've Been Up To 2026 Main Street Now Conference From April 12 to 15, I had the privilege of attending the 2026 Main Street Now Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the nation’s largest gathering of local leaders dedicated to strengthening downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts through preservation-based economic development. The conference offered valuable insight into community-driven strategies that can support the revitalization of historic corridors like Jackson Street in Historic West Las Vegas. Sessions highlighted powerful case studies, including the story of Historic Greenwood and Black Wall Street, deepening my understanding of the legacy, resilience, and ongoing work within these communities. One of the most inspiring parts of the experience was attending alongside local grassroots leaders from organizations such as the Jackson Street Alliance and Main Street Nevada. Together, we brought home new ideas, renewed energy, and a shared commitment to advancing equitable and vibrant economic opportunities in our own neighborhoods. Historic Westside Legacy Park Inductee Ceremony This year’s Historic Westside Legacy Park Induction Ceremony, held on April 18, was a beautiful celebration of community and history. We honored six remarkable individuals whose lifelong contributions strengthened the Historic Westside and the broader Las Vegas community: Mary Lee Carroll (posthumously), Greg McCurdy, Bishop Bill Herbert McDonnell, Alma Faye Hudson-McDonnell, Pastor Sam Roberson, and Juanita Smith (posthumously). I was grateful to stand alongside Congressman Horsford, Commissioner McCurdy, historian and master of ceremonies Claytee White and many community leaders. The program featured a moving spoken-word performance and a special finale by Las Vegas’ own Clint Holmes. Thank you to the inductees and their families for their enduring impact on Ward 5. Bolden Little League Opening Day Also on April 18, Bolden Little League kicked off its season with a lively opening day celebration. I had the joy of meeting the young athletes and their families, welcoming them to a new year of teamwork, growth and fun on the field. Bolden Little League thrives, thanks to the support of generous local sponsors. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Mario’s Market and Bolden Area Command for championing these players and helping create opportunities for our youth to shine. College of Southern Nevada Historic Westside Education & Training Center Community Kickoff After wrapping up at Bolden Little League, I headed to the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) Historic Westside Education and Training Center for their community kickoff event. We were welcomed with an energetic performance by the Robert O. Gibson Leadership Academy drumline, and attendees enjoyed delicious barbecue, funnel cakes and ice cream from local vendors. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the entire CSN team for hosting this event and highlighting the low and no‑cost programs available to the community. I also want to thank the local officials and community partners who joined us, as well as the vendors who shared valuable resources with residents. Third Annual Maternal Wellness Walk & Kinship Cookout Finally on April 18, the Historic Westside School campus hosted the third annual Maternal Wellness Walk and Kinship Cookout, organized by Tiara Flynn of Phenomenal Mama. Held during Black Maternal Health Week, the event offered vital resources for all moms, with a special focus on supporting Black mothers, who face significantly higher risks during childbirth — three times higher than white and Hispanic mothers. It was a beautiful and impactful gathering, and we are proud to host it here in the heart of the Historic Westside.
