Governor Ron DeSantis Celebrates Completion of River Road Widening Project in Sarasota County
Governor Ron DeSantis Celebrates Completion of River Road Widening Project in Sarasota County | Executive Office of the Governor Skip to main content Governor Ron DeSantis Celebrates Completion of River Road Widening Project in Sarasota County October 2 2026 VENICE, Fla.— Today, Governor Ron DeSantis celebrated the completion of the $61 million River Road (State Road 777) widening project in Sarasota County. The project expands five miles of River Road from two lanes to six lanes between U.S. 41 and I-75, tripling roadway capacity and providing significant congestion relief for Southwest Florida residents, businesses, and visitors. The project was completed through a joint investment by the state and Sarasota County. “Great to be in Sarasota County today to celebrate the completion of the SR-777 widening project ahead of schedule,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “These improvements will go a long way toward meeting travel demand and relieving congestion in Sarasota County.” "This project reflects FDOT’s commitment to delivering transportation improvements that make a meaningful difference for the people and communities we serve,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. “By looking at the entire corridor and finding opportunities to deliver more, we are building better connections and infrastructure designed to serve Southwest Florida for years to come." River Road has been a longstanding regional transportation priority, supported through coordination among FDOT, Sarasota County, the Sarasota/Manatee MPO, and other regional partners. While the original project plans included the expansion of River Road to four lanes, FDOT sought opportunities to provide even more relief to the surrounding community by increasing roadway capacity to six total lanes along the entire five-mile corridor. This change showcases Florida’s continued focus to bring thoughtful, community-driven transportation needs throughout the state, especially on some of Florida’s most critical evacuation routes. Beyond the additional roadway capacity, the project includes improvements throughout the corridor: Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements: Two 10-foot-wide shared-use paths along both sides of River Road to provide safer access and better connections to surrounding neighborhoods and community destinations. Safety Improvements: Upgraded lighting and signals, pedestrian islands, ADA-accessible ramps, and other improvements to enhance visibility, pedestrian access, and safety throughout the corridor. Wildlife Crossings: Two dedicated wildlife underpasses to provide safer passage for native wildlife beneath the roadway while helping reduce potential conflicts with motorists. Put your address in the search toolbar at the top left of the program and click Search. Click the feature that surrounds your canal, and a box will pop up with the associated canal name, depth, ranking, and more. The new plan ranks 96 canals in unincorporated Monroe County with poor or fair water quality ratings that do not meet the minimum state standards. Governor DeSantis’ office proposed the work program to help provide accountability in implementing canal restoration projects. The newly adopted Administration Commission Rule 28-20.140, F.A.C., amends the county Comprehensive Plan to include a 10-year canal restoration implementation work program. Like other tasks in the county’s work program, lack of progress on the new canal restoration tasks will reduce 20 percent of the county’s Rate of Growth Ordinance (ROGO) allocations. The county is under a deadline to formalize the canal selection and ranking criteria by June of this year to include it in the county’s update to the State. The selection criteria may be modified as more canal information becomes available. The selection criteria include various environmental factors, such as dissolved oxygen levels in canals, nutrient accumulation, canal depth, connectivity to nearshore waters, and the number of parcels along the canal. It also uses a second set of financial criteria to rank canals to take the best advantage of the county’s limited financial resources. Canal remediation techniques include organic removal, backfilling, culverts, weed gates, and gravity-fed injection wells to improve dissolved oxygen levels and overall canal water quality. The technologies were tested in several pilot projects within the county, Marathon, and Islamorada. The Monroe County BOCC approved a series of canal restoration demonstration projects. The results will be used to further define restoration costs and to provide information for future grant applications to state and federal sources. MIA continues America250 festivities with local artist demo series
As part of Miami International Airport’s ongoing celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, two local artists treated passengers and employees to hands-on art experiences this week to kick off MIA’s Artist Demo Summer Series. During two-hour sessions near gate D37, renowned Miami artist and illustrator Brian Reedy and Haitian-born Miami artist Annick Duvivier demonstrated how they bring their dynamic works to life and then got visitors into the act by teaching them how to create their own works of art so they could take a memento of Miami’s art culture home with them. On July 21, Duvivier provided passengers with magazine clippings of images from across America’s 50 states and guided them to design photo collages that blended their own stories, travels, and chosen imagery into a quick art project. Known for creating vibrant, uplifting art that elevates positive energy, Duvivier invited participants to see how she weaves varied visual elements into her unique style. The following day, Reedy hosted a hands-on block printing session featuring historic images from Miami-Dade County. Reedy is known worldwide for his distinctive ink-block prints on wood, influenced by traditional Ukiyo-e, Japanese, and European Medieval block prints.

MIA offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport and is also the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida, generating business revenue of $212 billion and approximately 60 percent of all international visitors to Florida annually. MIA celebrates America250 with flag-raising and sculpture dedication ceremony
MIA celebrates America250 with flag-raising and sculpture dedication ceremony 70 U.S. flags and world-renowned 20-foot monument now on display In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary on July 4, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava joined Miami International Airport officials for a special flag‑raising ceremony in MIA’s Central Garden. Instead of the 70 international flags representing each country served by nonstop flights from MIA, military veterans from the airport community and surrounding areas raised 70 U.S. flags in their place. The ceremony concluded with a patriotic flyover by one Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office helicopter above the event. The 70 U.S. flags will remain on display through the end of July. “ I am thrilled Miami International Airport is joining the commemoration of America250 with this powerful display at one of the world’s leading international gateways. More than 150,000 travelers pass through MIA every day, and now many of them will be able to experience this striking tribute to the enduring spirit of the American flag. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. „ Immediately after the flag-raising, Miami-Dade Aviation and Seaport Committee Chair Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins led a dedication ceremony for the Renaissance of Towers — a 20‑foot‑tall, three‑ton stainless steel sculpture by international artist Helidon Xhixha. Originally completed in 2007, the monument was installed this week at MIA’s Central Boulevard entrance. The $400,000 sculpture, previously showcased in cultural hubs including Venice, Florence, Berlin, Como, and Milan, reflects imagery of the American flag and draws inspiration from New York City’s Twin Towers as a tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Now positioned along a roadway traveled by more than 47,000 drivers daily, the monument was donated to Miami-Dade County through a partnership between Xhixha, Humberto Ortiz of AUM Construction, and Carlos and Martin Melo of the Melo Group, a Miami-based real estate developer. “ MIA has long awaited a memorable aesthetic symbol representative of our great community. On America’s 250th birthday, I am proud to unveil what I have worked to achieve- the installation of an iconic art piece representing the American Flag and the American Dream. I am grateful to internationally renowned artist Helidon Xhixha for donating his remarkable artwork to Miami-Dade County, and to all of our partners who helped bring this meaningful installation to MIA just in time for our country’s birthday. Aviation Chair Danielle Cohen Higgins. „ Miami International Airport, America’s busiest airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passengers, is receiving an unprecedented investment of $14 billion in capital improvements and maintenance upgrades.
