Fayette County Declares April Safe Digging Month

Fayette County officials proclaimed April as Safe Digging Month during a ceremony at Fire and EMS Headquarters, urging residents and contractors to call 811 before any excavation work.

Assistant Chief Scott Roberts presented the proclamation on behalf of Fire Chief Jeffery Hill. Representatives from Environmental Management, the Road Department, and the Utility Coordination Committee attended.

Striking underground utility lines can cause injuries, power outages, environmental damage, and expensive repairs. Even shallow digging of a few inches can hit buried lines.

County officials urged residents to call 811 before installing mailboxes, planting trees, or operating heavy machinery. The free service locates underground utilities before work begins, preventing service disruptions and protecting infrastructure.
