Snow Expected for Interior High-Elevation Areas, Flurries in Valleys

A Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Fairbanks, AK, indicating light rain and snow are expected to affect the Interior region.

This statement is in effect from September 28, 2026, at 2:42 PM AKDT, and will expire on September 29, 2026, at 3:15 PM AKDT.

Areas affected include the Dalton Highway Summits, White Mountains and High Terrain South of the Yukon River, Fortymile Country, Upper Chena River Valley, Eielson AFB and Salcha, Chatanika River Valley, Two Rivers, and the Fairbanks Metro Area.

Locations above 2000 feet have the highest chance for snow through Monday night, with snow levels dropping to 1000 feet by Tuesday. Valley locations, including Fairbanks, may see snowflakes mix with rain beginning Tuesday night, with flurries continuing into Wednesday. Little to no accumulation is expected in valleys through Wednesday afternoon.

Areas between 1000 and 2000 feet could see up to 1 inch of snow, though melting is expected upon ground contact. Above 2000 feet, 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible through Wednesday afternoon. Another round of light snow is becoming more likely Wednesday night into Thursday, with minor accumulations possible even in Fairbanks.
