Cold Temperatures and Light Snow Expected Across Interior Alaska

Fairbanks, AK – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Fairbanks has issued a Special Weather Statement for cold temperatures and light snow affecting multiple areas of Interior Alaska. Residents in the Dalton Highway Summits, White Mountains and High Terrain South of the Yukon River, Fortymile Country, Upper Chena River Valley, Eielson AFB and Salcha, Chatanika River Valley, Two Rivers, and the Fairbanks Metro Area should prepare for significantly colder conditions tonight and light snowfall Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Tonight, most areas are expected to dry out with only lingering sprinkles and flurries. Temperatures will drop noticeably by Wednesday morning, with most locations reaching the mid to upper 20s. A new front will bring light snow to the Interior from Wednesday night through Thursday morning. The Fairbanks area can expect generally 1 inch or less of snow. Higher accumulations, between 1 to 3 inches, are anticipated in the Chena Recreation Area, Chena Hot Springs, White Mountains, and Fortymile Country.

This Special Weather Statement was issued on September 29, 2026, at 3:16 PM AKDT and remains in effect until September 30, 2026, at 7:00 AM AKDT.
