Sneaker Wave Threat: Coastal Areas Urged to Exercise Extreme Caution

A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for coastal Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties due to an increased threat of sneaker waves from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, urging extreme caution near the water.

Coastal residents and visitors from Del Norte to Mendocino Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution due to an increased threat of sneaker waves. The National Weather Service (NWS) Eureka has issued a Beach Hazards Statement, effective from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, October 12 at 5:00 PM PDT.

This alert specifically impacts Coastal Del Norte, Northern Coastal Humboldt, Southwestern Humboldt, and Coastal Mendocino Counties. Sneaker waves are powerful, unexpected waves that can sweep across the beach without warning, posing a significant risk of pulling individuals into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches. These waves can also displace large objects such as logs, potentially crushing anyone in their path.

The NWS advises against being deceived by a seemingly calm ocean, as significant periods of small waves can precede a sneaker wave strike. To ensure safety, residents and visitors should avoid rocks and jetties, steer clear of steep beaches, maintain a considerable distance from the water, and never turn their back on the ocean.
