Residents in Esmeralda and Central Nye County should prepare for sub-freezing temperatures and strong winds. The National Weather Service (NWS) Las Vegas has issued a Freeze Watch effective from late Monday night, October 12, through Tuesday morning, October 13, with temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit possible. A Wind Advisory is also in effect until 5 AM PDT Monday, October 12, with south winds 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 45 mph.

These conditions could have significant impacts. Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects, and tree limbs could be blown down, potentially leading to power outages. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

The NWS advises immediate action: secure all outdoor objects. For the freezing temperatures, take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent water pipes from freezing, wrap them, drain them, or allow them to drip slowly. For the Wind Advisory, motorists, especially those in high-profile vehicles, should use extra caution as strong winds can make driving difficult.
