Two Men Sentenced for Multi-State Walmart Theft Ring, Including Florida Stores, Netting Over $362,000

Two men received significant prison sentences for their roles in an organized retail theft operation that stole over $362,000 from Walmart stores across 11 states, including Florida. Anthony Belser, 56, and George Mayo, 52, were sentenced in Cherokee County, Georgia, following a scheme that impacted consumers and store security measures, even here on the Suncoast.

The multi-state operation, which began in 2022 and spanned ten months, saw the duo hide expensive items inside larger product boxes. They then paid lower prices at checkout, effectively stealing the higher-value merchandise. The total value of stolen goods reached $362,844.

Investigators pieced together the extensive criminal enterprise using security footage, credit card transaction data, bank records, and rental car agreements. This evidence allowed prosecutors to link thefts across Florida, Georgia, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Cherokee County, Georgia, prosecutors charged the case under the state's RICO Act. This allowed them to treat the numerous thefts as a single, coordinated criminal enterprise rather than isolated incidents. District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway stated that the sentences reflect her office's commitment to prosecuting organized retail crime.

Anthony Belser received a sentence of 25 years with 10 years to serve in prison. George Mayo received a harsher sentence of 40 years with 20 years to serve. Both men were ordered to pay $328,448 in restitution for the stolen merchandise.

This case highlights how large-scale retail theft operations ultimately affect everyday shoppers. Stores often factor losses from such crimes into consumer prices and implement increased security measures. While the sentences have been handed down, the broader impact on retail practices and consumer costs will continue to be felt.
