Englewood native Drew Rasmussen carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning of Game 1 of the AL Division Series against the New York Yankees on Saturday. Though the no-hitter eluded him, Rasmussen’s dominant pitching and a crucial home run powered the Tampa Bay Rays to a 1-0 victory and an early series lead.
The game's lone run came in the third inning when Rays’ Jonathan Aranda hit a home run off Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole. That single swing proved decisive, as Rasmussen, a key contributor for the Rays, stifled the Yankees’ potent lineup. He struck out 10 batters, walked two and retired 15 consecutive Yankees.
Rasmussen’s near no-hitter highlighted a playoff game that captivated fans. Only three no-hitters have been recorded in postseason history, demonstrating the rarity of Rasmussen’s performance. The Rays’ pitching staff, with Rasmussen leading the way, limited the Yankees to one hit.
The Yankees faced challenges without Aaron Judge, who sat out due to a calf injury. Their offense struggled significantly. Austin Wells broke up the no-hitter with a double in the eighth inning but was thrown out trying to advance to third base, ending the inning and any momentum for New York.
The Rays now lead the series 1-0. The Yankees must find offensive solutions, especially if Judge remains sidelined, while the Rays aim to continue their strong pitching.
