The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County confirmed rabies in a raccoon caught off Jarvis Street on May 29. The agency issued an advisory June 6 urging residents to avoid contact with wild animals including raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes.

Residents should vaccinate pets and livestock, keep them supervised or secured, and remove outdoor food sources. Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should seek medical attention and call DOH-Charlotte at 941-624-7200. Charlotte County Animal Control removes strays at 941-833-5690.
