Greensboro Man Drowns Saving Sister on Lake Norman

A 21-year-old Greensboro man died Saturday evening in Lake Norman near Terrell, North Carolina, after his sister’s kayak capsized. Dorian Jackson drowned while attempting to rescue her.

Jackson’s sister, who wore a life jacket, struggled in the water about 30 yards from a neighbor’s dock. Neighbors brought her safely ashore. Jackson, who was not wearing a life jacket, went under during the rescue attempt and did not resurface.

A multi-agency search crew recovered Jackson's body around 1 p.m. Sunday. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the incident.

Authorities remind the public of the importance of water safety. They advise that instinct alone is insufficient on the water and proper preparation, including wearing life jackets and having rescue equipment accessible, can prevent tragedies.
