GRANBY, CT – A Granby man faces charges after shooting a black bear on his property Friday, Sept. 27, 2024. Michael Gero, 39, told emergency dispatchers he killed the animal after finding it eating one of his chickens.
Gero told investigators he believed the bear had killed his goats the previous month. He has been charged with using deadly force to kill a bear and is scheduled to appear in court in Torrington on Oct. 9.
Connecticut law permits killing black bears under specific circumstances. Defending livestock does not automatically provide legal justification, which is the central issue in Gero's case.
While Englewood does not face black bear problems, residents are familiar with wildlife encounters. Alligators are occasionally found in local waterways, coyotes prey on pets in suburban areas, and snakes are a common sight in garages. Florida's regulations for managing these situations are similarly specific.
