Englewood residents heading to the coast this weekend face increased dangers from Tropical Storm Isaias, even though the storm's center is forecast to stay west of the Suncoast. The National Hurricane Center reported Isaias formed early Wednesday over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico with 40 mph winds and is expected to strengthen rapidly.
Forecasters predict Isaias will become a hurricane by Thursday and could reach 110 mph by early Friday as it tracks north toward the northern Gulf Coast. While the storm's center is expected to remain well to the west of Englewood, the area can expect higher rain chances, gusty winds, and rough surf, especially along shores near Stump Pass and Manasota Key.
The primary concern for beachgoers is the heightened risk of rip currents. These dangerous currents can pull even strong swimmers away from the shore and often appear days before a storm makes landfall. Hurricane Hunters are flying missions into Isaias to gather data for more precise forecasts.
Officials urge extreme caution for anyone planning to visit local beaches. Swim near a lifeguard and respect any warning flags posted. Residents should finalize storm preparations, particularly if they have friends or family in areas like Louisiana or the Florida Panhandle, which are under Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches.
