Peg Mann volunteers every Thursday at McLeod Seacoast Hospital in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to comfort patients facing surgery. Mann arrives early, managing the comfort cart and sitting with anxious families in the waiting room before setting up her harp. Her calm presence offers a welcome respite.
Mann, who has played the harp since 2005 and continues monthly lessons, also plays piano and organ. Volunteer manager Peggy Skudera initially had reservations about the instrument but has seen Mann’s profound impact. Skudera described Mann as deeply connected to her music, aiming to provide background ambiance rather than drawing attention.
After each shift, Mann reports feeling a sense of connection, having made new friends. Her volunteer work reminds patients that comfort can extend beyond medical care, often stemming from community members sharing their talents.
