PASS It On – Fire Extinguisher Safety
A fire extinguisher is an important part of any home or workplace safety plan, but knowing which one to choose and how to use it correctly is just as important as having one on hand. A little knowledge goes a long way in helping you stay prepared. Fire extinguishers are meant for small, contained fires. They should not be used if the fire is spreading rapidly or putting you in danger. Use a fire extinguisher only if: The fire is small and controllable You have the correct extinguisher for the type of fire The extinguisher is nearby, fully charged, and ready to use You have a safe and clear exit in case conditions worsen If the fire is too large, growing quickly, or you feel unsafe, leave immediately. Close the door behind you to slow the fire's spread and call 911. Fire Extinguisher Classes Extinguishers are labeled according to the type of fire they are designed to fight. Using the wrong one can make the situation worse: Class A (triangle symbol) – For ordinary materials like wood, paper, fabric, and some plastics Class B (square symbol) – For flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, grease, or paint Class C (circle symbol) – For electrical equipment, outlets, appliances, and wiring Class D (star symbol) – For combustible metals, most often found in industrial or lab settings Class K – For cooking oils and fats, often used in commercial kitchens Many extinguishers are designed for multiple uses, such as ABC models (common in homes) or BC models (often found in garages and kitchens). Choosing the Right Extinguisher Each extinguisher has a rating that shows its firefighting capacity—the higher the number, the larger the fire it can handle. Keep in mind that larger extinguishers are heavier, so choose one you can manage easily. Always look for extinguishers tested and approved by recognized organizations like UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or FM (Factory Mutual). How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: The PASS Technique If you need to use a fire extinguisher, remember PASS: Pull the pin Aim low, pointing the nozzle at the fire's base Squeeze the handle to release the agent Sweep side to side until the flames are out Even after the fire appears out, watch carefully for re-ignition. If the extinguisher empties and the fire is still burning, evacuate right away and call 911. Walton County Fire Rescue offers fire extinguisher training for businesses and residents served by Walton County Fire Rescue. Email [email protected] for more information or to schedule a training.

Community Health Program
Walton County Fire Rescue was the first in the panhandle of Florida to introduce a Community Health Program. This mobile integrated health program is free for all Walton County residents and consists of trained, licensed medical professionals who respond to certain EMS calls for service and provide home visits for patients with non-emergency needs. Through education and scheduled visits, The Community Health Program provides patients with in-home care that they had previously obtained through emergency room visits. The program also allows patients to connect with doctors from the comfort of their own home using telemedicine. With assistance from our medical professionals, patients can participate in virtual doctor visits using Tele911. During these virtual appointments, doctors can provide patient evaluations, prescribe prescriptions, or direct Walton County Fire Rescue nurses with proper patient treatment as needed. The Community Health Program limits the number of 911 calls made, keeping EMS providers available to respond to emergency calls while also providing community members with easier access to medical care and minimizing healthcare costs. Patients can sign up for the Community Health Program by calling the non-emergency line at (850) 892-8111 and requesting to speak with a home health nurse or sign up online by filling out the form available on the website. For questions or more information, contact [email protected]. TARGET PATIENT POPULATIONS: Frequent Falls – The program seeks to mitigate fall risks by providing in-home safety assessments and fall prevention education. Mental Health / Substance Abuse – The program seeks to identify patients that would be better served outside the emergency room setting and redirect these individuals to the appropriate community resource(s). Diabetic Patients – The program provides nutritional and disease management education to diabetic patients to prevent unnecessary calls for emergency responders. Congestive Heart Failure / Chronic Respiratory Conditions – Ensuring proper medication compliance, nutrition, and education on disease management for patients who are diagnosed with congestive heart failure or other chronic respiratory conditions. High System Utilizers – The Community Health program provides guidance to patients who previously used the 911 system and emergency medical services for primary care concerns. Medical professionals provide education for patients and help align them with primary care resources available within the community.
SafetyNet
"SafetyNet | Walton County Sheriff's Office, FL SafetyNet The Walton County Sheriff's Office has been calling elderly and home-bound residents for more than 30 years. SafetyNet (previously known as the Elderly Call List) is a free service in which the Walton County Sheriff's Office makes daily phone calls to check on the safety of senior citizens of Walton County. SafetyNet eases the concern of friends and relatives, who may find it difficult to maintain constant reliable contact with elderly friends and/or family members. A database is maintained by the Walton County Sheriff's Office of citizens who are enrolled in the program. This database includes your demographic information and one to three caregiver contacts. How does the program work? Each morning, Walton County Sheriff's Office communications officers call the registered citizen assigned to them and check to make sure they are doing well. After contact is made, it is noted in the registered citizen's file in our database. If the SafetyNet member does not answer the phone, the communications officer will try to call two more times. If there is no answer or the line is busy each time they call, a deputy will be dispatched to the registered address to perform a welfare check on the citizen. If the door is locked when the deputy arrives, he will contact the SafetyNet member's emergency contact/key holder(s) to assist the deputy and allow entrance into the home. When will the calls take place? SafetyNet welfare check calls take place between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM seven days a week. How do I sign up? If you are interested in joining the WCSO SafetyNet program or if you are interested in subscribing an elderly friend or family member to the SafetyNet program, please give us a call at (850) 892-8111. Art in the Park Program
"Art in the Park Program Creativity with a Purpose Art in the Park is a community-based program launched by the Walton County Sheriff's Office in 2021 to help prevent graffiti and vandalism in local parks by turning blank walls into works of art. The idea? Give high school art students the chance to showcase their talent while making our parks brighter, more welcoming spaces for everyone. It's about creating something positive, together. Where Art Meets Community When students are invited to paint murals in public spaces, they form a stronger connection to their community—and help protect it, too. Art in the Park not only gives young artists a platform to express themselves, but also offers scholarship opportunities to support their education and future goals. What started in Driftwood Estates has grown into something bigger. From Wee Care Park to Helen McCall Park, students have stepped up to bring color and character to Walton County parks. Building a Brighter Future Art in the Park is more than paint on a wall. It's about giving students a voice, creating safer spaces, and building something lasting. Each mural tells a story—one of creativity, teamwork, and pride in where we live. We're excited to see where the next mural pops up, and even more excited to support the next group of student artists who will help shape it."
