Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) developed a new tenant transparency tool to help potential renters identify properties with reported dangerous housing conditions. The tool, which uses municipal code compliance data to create a heat map and search function, aims to empower residents to make informed decisions before signing a lease.
City Council members Jimmy Peluso, Michael Boylan, and Moné Holder will join JALA CEO & President Jim Kowalski to officially unveil the tool this coming Friday, September 25, at 9:30 a.m. The public can access the tool at registry.jaxstablehousing.org/static/index.html.
The launch of this new resource follows recent concerns about living conditions in local rental properties. One notable incident involved a ceiling collapse at Calloway Cove, an event that highlighted the need for greater transparency regarding housing safety.
This initiative provides a direct benefit to Jacksonville residents by offering a clear, accessible way to research potential rental properties. It allows individuals to proactively check for code violations and dangerous conditions, potentially preventing them from moving into unsafe housing. The tool also promotes accountability among property owners, as reported issues become publicly visible.
The tool's development and unveiling underscore a community-wide effort to address housing concerns and improve tenant protections in Jacksonville. Residents interested in learning more or utilizing the tool can visit the website after its official launch on Friday.
