Duval County music fans can revisit significant rock history moments that occurred on Oct. 4 in past years. These events, from chart-topping hits to band announcements and tragic losses, have shaped popular music.
On Oct. 4, 1969, American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival's album "Green River" reached No. 1 on the album charts. The band, known for its prolific late 1960s and early 1970s output, saw commercial success with this album.
The year before, on Oct. 4, 1968, British supergroup Cream began its announced farewell tour. The tour marked the end of the influential power trio, pioneers in hard rock and blues rock. Cream disbanded after the tour but reunited in 2005.
In 1980, British rock band Queen hit the music charts' pinnacle on Oct. 4. Their single "Another One Bites the Dust" reached No. 1, a success reportedly inspired by Michael Jackson. The song topped the charts for three weeks, showcasing Queen's adaptability.
Tragically, Oct. 4, 1970, marked the death of singer Janis Joplin, whose powerful voice left an indelible mark on music. Joplin died of a heroin overdose at age 27, becoming a member of the "27 Club."
On Oct. 4, 1996, Van Halen announced Gary Cherone, former singer for Extreme, as its new frontman. This followed speculation about David Lee Roth's potential return, as Roth had recently recorded two new songs with the band. Cherone's tenure with Van Halen produced one album and one tour before the band reunited with Roth.
