Rip Current Risk, High Surf, and Coastal Flood Advisory for Local Beaches
A Rip Current Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for local beaches, bringing dangerous rip currents, large waves, and minor flooding. Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water, and travelers should allow extra time due to potential road closures.
Residents and visitors in Coastal Nassau, Coastal Duval, Coastal Flagler, Northeast Coastal St. Johns, Southeast Coastal St. Johns, Coastal Glynn, and Coastal Camden counties are urged to exercise extreme caution due to a combination of dangerous rip currents, high surf, and minor coastal flooding, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Jacksonville FL.
A Rip Current Statement, effective until 5:00 AM EDT on October 8th, indicates a high risk of dangerous rip currents through late Wednesday night. Inexperienced swimmers should avoid entering the water. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to relax and float, not to swim against the current. Swimmers should attempt to swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 5:00 AM EDT Thursday, with large breaking waves of 6 to 7 feet expected. This creates dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in place until 5:00 AM EDT Thursday, predicting minor coastal flooding. This may lead to flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with isolated road closures possible. If travel is necessary, allow extra time and do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take protective actions.
These advisories were issued by NWS Jacksonville FL today, October 6, at 3:10 PM EDT.
