MIAMI: The Alliance for Aging installed new officers and board members at its 26th Annual Installation and Luncheon on Jan. 21 at Jungle Island, where more than 200 aging services, insurance and health care professionals gathered.

The Alliance provides information and access to services for older adults and their families in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The organization also funds home and community-based programs that help older adults remain at home rather than enter institutional care.

Judge Maria M. Korvick installed Dr. Robert H. Foley as board chairman, Caren Lesser as vice chair, Lorraine Harris as secretary and Maria A. Rams as treasurer. Deborah J. Lowe, JD, LL.M., joined the board as an honorary member. Sheryle Manning, Pam Martin, Emilio Nunez and Rosa Romero joined as new board members.

Dr. Dolores Perdomo of the University of Miami’s Center on Aging delivered the keynote address. She discussed challenges facing the health care and caregiving industries as Baby Boomers approach retirement, including a projected decline in the ratio of caregivers to patients. Perdomo also said Baby Boomers have changed the face of aging.

The luncheon also recognized people and groups for community service. The Alliance presented awards to Roberto Perez, Antonio Friguls, the Cutler Ridge Women’s Club and William Burdette. The organization named Amarilys Gutierrez and Leslie Thomas Employees of the Year. Twenty exhibitors took part in an information reception sponsored by CAC-Florida Medical Centers. Residents and families seeking aging-services information can contact the Alliance at 305-670-6500 or call its Elder Helpline at 305-670-HELP.
