Miami-Dade County Commissioners approved a 50-cent increase to standard Metrobus and Metrorail fares. The change, effective Jan. 1, 2027, marks the transit system's first fare adjustment in 13 years.
The 9-4 vote raises the standard fare from $2.25 to $2.75, projected to generate about $9 million annually. This revenue will prevent service cuts previously approved in the county budget. Funds will preserve bus routes, including some serving Southside and neighborhoods near Florida A&M University, and maintain late-night service on others.
Commissioner Oliver Gilbert sponsored the resolution. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will develop a proposal to introduce fares for the Metromover, a free downtown circulator since late 2002. Metrorail midday frequency will also see a slight adjustment, with intervals between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. increasing by 30 seconds to one minute.
"Public transit connects people to opportunity, to their families and to the places that matter most in their lives," Levine Cava said. "While this is our first fare increase in more than 13 years, we recognize that every dollar matters for working families. The additional revenue will help keep more buses running and preserve the service residents rely on." The administration had planned to eliminate 11 bus routes and reduce hours on 25 others. The approved changes will save six routes from elimination and maintain late-night service on seven.
Commissioners Anthony Rodriguez, Rob Gonzalez, Vicki Lopez and Natalie Milian Orbis opposed the increase. Gonzalez argued the administration should seek internal savings first. Commissioner Raquel Regalado supported charging a $1 fare for the Metromover, citing fairness to Metrobus and Metrorail riders.
Existing free and discounted fare programs for seniors, veterans and students will continue. Levine Cava plans outreach to help residents determine eligibility.
