Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Houston: Immediate Action Required
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Houston until October 10, 2026, with severe winds, major flooding potential, and possible tornadoes requiring immediate protective action.
HOUSTON, TX – October 9, 2026 – The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Houston, effective immediately as of 10:57 PM EDT. This severe warning is in effect until 7:00 AM UTC on October 10, 2026. Residents in and around Dothan and Cottonwood are urged to take immediate protective actions.
Strong tropical storm force winds are expected, with peak gusts potentially reaching 55 mph. There is a potential for winds between 58 to 73 mph. Residents must complete all remaining efforts to protect life and property now. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Significant damage to roofing, siding, and outbuildings is possible, along with downed trees and power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1 inch of rainfall anticipated. Major flooding is possible, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may rapidly overflow their banks, and floodwaters could enter structures. Roads may become impassable, and driving conditions will be dangerous.
The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with a potential for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Listen for tornado watches and warnings. If a tornado warning is issued, be prepared to shelter quickly. Manufactured homes and boats are particularly vulnerable; occupants should relocate to safe shelter.
