Immediate Tropical Storm Warning for Houston Area: Prepare for Dangerous Conditions

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the Houston area, including Dothan and Cottonwood, effective immediately with severe winds, major flooding, and tornadoes expected; residents must complete preparations and seek shelter by 2:07 AM EDT.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the Houston area, effective immediately as of October 10 at 2:07 AM EDT. This warning, issued by the NWS Tallahassee FL, includes Dothan and Cottonwood and indicates severe conditions are imminent. The warning is set to expire at 10:15 AM UTC today.

Residents should plan for dangerous winds of strong tropical storm force, with potential for gusts up to 73 mph. Significant wind damage is expected, including to roofing, siding, and mobile homes, with several large trees snapped or uprooted. Unsecured objects will become dangerous projectiles. All remaining efforts to protect life and property must be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.

A Flood Watch is in effect, and major flooding from heavy rain is anticipated. Emergency plans should account for potential evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could lead to serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams are expected to overflow, and flood waters may enter structures, making roads impassable.

The situation is also favorable for tornadoes. Emergency plans should include the potential for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats are urged to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings, and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Tornadoes can hinder emergency plans and cause significant damage, power loss, and communication failures.
