A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Dothan and Cottonwood until October 9, 2026, 7:15 AM UTC, bringing risks of hazardous winds, extensive flooding, and tornadoes; residents must seek shelter and prepare for severe conditions.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Dothan and Cottonwood, effective immediately, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee. This warning is in effect until 7:15 AM UTC on October 9, 2026. Residents in these areas must prepare for hazardous conditions including strong winds, extensive flooding, and the potential for tornadoes.
Wind speeds are forecast to reach 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with potential for sustained winds of 39-57 mph. Residents should complete all property protection efforts immediately and move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Expect potential damage to lightweight structures and numerous broken tree limbs. Scattered power and communication outages are possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts. This poses a threat for major flooding. Emergency plans should include potential evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could lead to serious injury or loss of life. Rivers may overflow, and many structures could flood. Driving conditions will become dangerous with widespread road closures.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for tornadoes. There is a potential for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats must relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be prepared to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Scattered tornadoes could cause considerable damage and hinder emergency operations.
