Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Houston: Immediate Action Required
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Houston, including Dothan and Cottonwood, until 7:15 PM UTC today, with immediate action required due to hazardous winds, major flooding potential, and an increased threat of tornadoes.
HOUSTON – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the Houston area, effective immediately, as of October 9 at 11:05 AM EDT, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, FL. This warning is in effect until 7:15 PM UTC today.
Residents in affected areas, including Dothan and Cottonwood, must move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. The NWS forecasts peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage to porches, awnings, and carports. Unsecured lightweight objects should be brought indoors.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, potentially leading to major flooding. Emergency plans should account for possible evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to take action can result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and many roads may become impassable.
Furthermore, the NWS indicates a very favorable situation for many tornadoes, with some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats are urged to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Tornadoes can cause extensive damage, including roof and wall failures, and power outages.
