Ukrainian President Replaces Top Military Commander Amid Public Protests

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed General Valerii Zaluzhnyi from his role as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The presidential office announced the change in military leadership on Thursday.

The removal of General Zaluzhnyi occurred after public protests and reports of a strained relationship between the general and the president. These tensions reportedly centered on disagreements regarding military planning and operational strategies.

Following Zaluzhnyi's departure, President Zelenskyy appointed Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi as the new Commander-in-Chief. Syrskyi previously commanded Ukraine's ground forces.

General Zaluzhnyi had held the position of Commander-in-Chief since July 2021. His tenure included leading the armed forces through the initial phases of the ongoing conflict.
