Earthquake Strikes Southern Japan, Causes Injuries and Damage

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Japan's southern Kumamoto prefecture on Thursday, causing injuries and structural damage. Japanese authorities reported at least 50 individuals sustained injuries. The seismic event also led to power outages in the region.

Fire service officials stated that individuals became trapped inside a shopping mall following the earthquake. Rescue efforts were initiated to assist those affected. Reports of a blast at the mall also emerged, though details remained limited.

The earthquake inflicted damage on Kumamoto Castle, a historic landmark. The castle's stone walls sustained visible harm, and parts of its structure showed signs of collapse. Local residents described strong tremors.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported individuals trapped under debris following the quake. The extent of the damage across the affected area continued to be assessed by emergency services.
