Veterans Services Many of us take our freedoms for granted, but our staff at Chamberlain Huckeriede Funeral Home proudly acknowledges the sacrifices made by those who have served our country through their patriotism, love of country and willingness to protect others.Our staff is committed to providing quality service and professional assistance to help families complete the necessary forms to obtain benefits that are provided through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs for deceased veterans. What are VA burial benefits and memorial items? The VA burial benefits are designed to assist service members, veterans, and their families plan and pay for a burial or memorial service in a VA national cemetery. Memorial items are provided through the Veterans Affairs to honor the service of those who have served the country. Who qualifies for burial benefits and burial in a national cemetery? Veterans, service members, spouses, and dependents may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery, as well as other benefits, if they meet one of the requirements listed below: * A veteran who didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge * A service member who died while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty for training * The spouse or minor child of a veteran, even if the veteran died first * In some cases, the unmarried adult dependent child of a veteran What are military funeral honors and a committal service? Military funeral honors include the playing of “Taps,” a rifle detail, a color guard and uniformed service members who properly fold and present the United States flag to the grieving family. These flags are typically given to the deceased’s next of kin or close friend. In order for the survivors to qualify to receive the burial flag, the veteran or reservist must be described by at least one of the following: * Served in wartime * Died while serving on active duty after May 27, 1941 * Served after January 31, 1955 * Served in peacetime and left military service before June 27, 1950, after serving at least one enlistment or because of a disability that was caused - or made worse - by their active military service * Served in the Selected Reserves, or served in the military forces of the Philippines while in service of the United States and died on or after April 25, 1951. What are burial benefits and how do I apply? The veterans death benefits help cover the burial, funeral and transportation costs associated with the deceased’s services and disposition. For those being buried in a national cemetery, survivors can receive assistance with the burial and funeral costs, the plot or internment, and the transporting of the veteran’s remains for burial.You must file a claim for a non-service-connected burial allowance within two years after the veteran’s burial or cremation. There is no time limit to file for a service-connected burial, plot or interment allowance.You can apply online at https://www.va.gov/burials-and-memorials/application/530/introduction or by mail after completing the VA Form 21P-530.A veteran who didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge or a service member who died while on active duty may be eligible for a headstone or marker if they meet certain requirements. To find out if your deceased loved one qualifies, visit https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/memorial-items/headstones-markers-medallions/The Department of Veteran Affairs also provides a headstone for unmarked graves of an eligible deceased veteran at no charge. Notice is hereby given that the MCJDC Board of Trustees proposes to reemploy Dana Fambro (Moore), who will retire from the position of Superintendent of the Multi County Juvenile Detention Center, as a reemployed retirant in the same position. The proposed retirement date is November 30, 2026, and reemployment as Superintendent is scheduled to begin December 1, 2026. In accordance with Ohio Revised Code Section 145.381, the Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting to consider the proposed reemployment of Dana Fambro (Moore) as Superintendent following her retirement. Cuyahoga County Plants Heritage Tree
The white oak tree was planted in Lake View Cemetery as part of the America 250 celebration Media Contact: Jennifer Ciaccia, Press Secretary216-250-5863 | [email protected] CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – A ceremonial tree planting took root in Cuyahoga County today as part of the Heritage Trees: Planting History program under America 250-Ohio, the official state commission responsible for spearheading Ohio's celebrations and commemorations around America’s semiquincentennial in 2026. The Heritage Trees program officially kicked off in Lima, on Arbor Day 2025, and will ensure the planting of a commemorative tree in communities across the state. Started in 2025 and continuing throughout 2026, Heritage Trees will be planted in all 88 of Ohio’s counties. In Cuyahoga County, the tree has been planted in Lake View Cemetery. Lakeview Cemetery was chosen as the site for the Heritage Tree because it is the final resting place of generations of civic, military, and community leaders whose lives reflect Cuyahoga County’s role in the American story. The Heritage Trees initiative draws inspiration from the historic Liberty Tree in Boston during the Revolutionary War period. The Heritage Trees program aims to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary by planting native-to-Ohio white oak trees across the state. Throughout the celebration, America 250-Ohio will offer each Ohio county a white oak tree in honor of America’s 250th birthday. Sites selected in each county could be a city that acts as the county seat or participates in the Tree City USA program. “Lake View Cemetery is a fitting place for Cuyahoga County’s Heritage Tree because it connects generations of our community and preserves the stories of so many people who helped to shape our region,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. “As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, this tree will serve as a living reminder of our history and of our responsibility to the generations that will follow us.” White oak trees were chosen as Heritage Trees because they grow in many soil types, resist most tree diseases and are native to Ohio. A specific white oak species will be chosen based on the county climate and purchased from a reputable Ohio tree nursery. The Heritage Trees program is made possible by Presenting Sponsor Cenovus Energy and Supporting Sponsors Ohio Liquor and The Lubrizol Foundation. When Death Occurs
When Death Occurs Immediately following the death of a loved one, there are many decisions that must be made. At this time, you may find your emotions are heightened, and for that reason it is a good idea to ask for help in making all the decisions and arrangements. Additionally, the funeral home’s staff is eager to assist you and the family in making the best decisions possible. This information can help guide you and your family through the process. Contact The Proper Authorities Before any arrangements and decisions can be made, a legal pronouncement of death must be declared. If your loved one dies inside of a medical or nursing facility like a hospital or nursing home, the staff will handle getting this declaration made. If your loved one dies at home, you need to immediately contact the local emergency officials to come and take them to a hospital where they can be legally declared dead. Family members who die under hospice care can be declared dead by the hospice staff. This legal declaration must be made before the family can proceed with making any funeral arrangements or handling any legal affairs. Begin To Make Arrangements Once your loved one has been declared dead you and your family can proceed with making any type of funeral arrangements. Your loved one may have pre-planned any type of services, and you and your family should first look into those choices. If your loved one has not made any previous type of arrangements, and you have decided on which funeral home you would like to use for the services, you will contact them and meet with the funeral director and begin discussing options. During this time, if the deceased hasn’t made their final wishes known, the family will need to decide if they will bury or cremate the body, and what type of service should be held. These decisions include the time, date and location of any service; what type of casket or urn your loved one needs; drafting an obituary notice; deciding on pallbearers; and make any decisions about the specifics of the service like who the minister will be, what music will be played and who will speak. As part of the process to begin making the funeral arrangements, if the deceased was active or retired military, contact the Veterans Administration to determine if they offer any death benefits or service options. Information Funeral Directors May Need Once you have met the funeral director, they will advise you on any information or paperwork they need for the death certificate or to proceed with making final arrangements.Information Required: * Full name and address * Marital status * Race/Ethnicity * Date and city of birth * Highest level of education * Father’s name, mother’s maiden name * Name of spouse * Occupation and employer Documents Funeral Directors May Need Funeral directors will need important documents to complete any legal paperwork. These documents include: * Account statements * Beneficiary designations * Life insurance policies * Military discharge papers (form DD 214) * Social Security number Taking Care Of Personal Property Following the death of your loved one, there are few things you need to attend to involving the deceased’s personal life. First, secure your loved one’s property. Make sure their home and vehicle are properly secure. If your loved one has a pet, make the necessary arrangements for the pet to be taken care of by family or friends. Any mail that comes to your loved one should be forwarded to a family member that plans to handle the deceased’s estate. Any mail that piles up at a vacant home only alarms potential intruders that a home is empty. Make sure to contact the deceased’s boss and inform them of the death. If your loved one had any upcoming appointments, make contact to notify them about the death and to cancel the appointment.

Veterans, service members, spouses, and dependents may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery, as well as other benefits, if they meet one of the requirements listed below: * A veteran who didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge * A service member who died while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty for training * The spouse or minor child of a veteran, even if the veteran died first * In some cases, the unmarried adult dependent child of a veteran What are military funeral honors and a committal service? Military funeral honors include the playing of “Taps,” a rifle detail, a color guard and uniformed service members who properly fold and present the United States flag to the grieving family. These flags are typically given to the deceased’s next of kin or close friend. In order for the survivors to qualify to receive the burial flag, the veteran or reservist must be described by at least one of the following: * Served in wartime * Died while serving on active duty after May 27, 1941 * Served after January 31, 1955 * Served in peacetime and left military service before June 27, 1950, after serving at least one enlistment or because of a disability that was caused - or made worse - by their active military service * Served in the Selected Reserves, or served in the military forces of the Philippines while in service of the United States and died on or after April 25, 1951. What are burial benefits and how do I apply? The veterans death benefits help cover the burial, funeral and transportation costs associated with the deceased’s services and disposition. For those being buried in a national cemetery, survivors can receive assistance with the burial and funeral costs, the plot or internment, and the transporting of the veteran’s remains for burial.You must file a claim for a non-service-connected burial allowance within two years after the veteran’s burial or cremation. There is no time limit to file for a service-connected burial, plot or interment allowance.You can apply online at https://www.va.gov/burials-and-memorials/application/530/introduction or by mail after completing the VA Form 21P-530.A veteran who didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge or a service member who died while on active duty may be eligible for a headstone or marker if they meet certain requirements. When Death Occurs
"When Death Occurs Immediately following the death of a loved one, there are many decisions that must be made. At this time, you may find your emotions are heightened, and for that reason it is a good idea to ask for help in making all the decisions and arrangements. Additionally, the funeral home’s staff is eager to assist you and the family in making the best decisions possible. This information can help guide you and your family through the process. Contact The Proper Authorities Before any arrangements and decisions can be made, a legal pronouncement of death must be declared. If your loved one dies inside of a medical or nursing facility like a hospital or nursing home, the staff will handle getting this declaration made. If your loved one dies at home, you need to immediately contact the local emergency officials to come and take them to a hospital where they can be legally declared dead. Family members who die under hospice care can be declared dead by the hospice staff. This legal declaration must be made before the family can proceed with making any funeral arrangements or handling any legal affairs. Begin To Make Arrangements Once your loved one has been declared dead you and your family can proceed with making any type of funeral arrangements. Your loved one may have pre-planned any type of services, and you and your family should first look into those choices. If your loved one has not made any previous type of arrangements, and you have decided on which funeral home you would like to use for the services, you will contact them and meet with the funeral director and begin discussing options. During this time, if the deceased hasn’t made their final wishes known, the family will need to decide if they will bury or cremate the body, and what type of service should be held. These decisions include the time, date and location of any service; what type of casket or urn your loved one needs; drafting an obituary notice; deciding on pallbearers; and make any decisions about the specifics of the service like who the minister will be, what music will be played and who will speak. As part of the process to begin making the funeral arrangements, if the deceased was active or retired military, contact the Veterans Administration to determine if they offer any death benefits or service options. Information Funeral Directors May Need Once you have met the funeral director, they will advise you on any information or paperwork they need for the death certificate or to proceed with making final arrangements.Information Required: * Full name and address * Marital status * Race/Ethnicity * Date and city of birth * Highest level of education * Father’s name, mother’s maiden name * Name of spouse * Occupation and employer Documents Funeral Directors May Need Funeral directors will need important documents to complete any legal paperwork. These documents include: * Account statements * Beneficiary designations * Life insurance policies * Military discharge papers (form DD 214) * Social Security number Taking Care Of Personal Property Following the death of your loved one, there are few things you need to attend to involving the deceased’s personal life. First, secure your loved one’s property. Make sure their home and vehicle are properly secure. If your loved one has a pet, make the necessary arrangements for the pet to be taken care of by family or friends. Any mail that comes to your loved one should be forwarded to a family member that plans to handle the deceased’s estate. Any mail that piles up at a vacant home only alarms potential intruders that a home is empty. Make sure to contact the deceased’s boss and inform them of the death. If your loved one had any upcoming appointments, make contact to notify them about the death and to cancel the appointment."
