US Catholic Bishops Form AI Task Force to Safeguard Human Dignity, Led by Bishop Oscar Cantù

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Administrative Committee established a new task force last week to address the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Bishops' Task Force on Preserving Human Dignity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence will focus on promoting policies and practices that protect human dignity, religious liberty, democratic institutions, workers, families, and vulnerable populations.

Bishop Oscar Cantù of San Jose will chair the newly formed task force. The committee met on September 16, 2026, with representatives from various tech firms and AI specialists. This dialogue aimed to identify ways the Church can contribute to the moral foundation of AI models and steps companies can take to prevent misuse of their inventions.

Chieko Noguchi, executive director of public affairs for the USCCB, issued a statement following the meeting. She highlighted the urgent need to address the dangers AI technology presents and to ensure it remains at the service of humanity. The discussions also explored how the Church and industry can collaborate to ensure technology is human-centered, respects individual dignity, and benefits everyone.

Pope Leo XIV's encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, inspired this initiative. The encyclical called for building forms of cooperation and cultivating a culture of shared responsibility. The USCCB's actions reflect a direct response to this appeal, aiming to guide the development and use of AI in a morally sound direction.

The membership of the task force has not yet been determined. However, its formation signals a proactive approach by the Catholic Church to engage with the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence and its societal impact.
