About the Department The New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) is one of the state’s largest agencies, responsible for safe and secure prisons and community supervision. The NMCD operates eight prison facilities, housing more than 5,600 incarcerated individuals. It also includes four probation and parole regions, supervising more than 15,000 people in communities across New Mexico. The department is committed to public safety and accountability, while also providing programs and services. Through its Reentry Division, the NMCD and community volunteers provide education and career technical training to help incarcerated individuals prepare for release and successfully return to their communities.
