High Rip Current Risk, High Surf Advisory for Local Coasts
A High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory have been issued for coastal areas of Volusia, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Brevard counties, urging the public to stay out of the water through late Sunday night.
Residents and visitors in Coastal Volusia, Coastal Indian River, Coastal St. Lucie, Coastal Martin, Mainland Northern Brevard, Northern Brevard Barrier Islands, Mainland Southern Brevard, and Southern Brevard Barrier Islands counties are advised to remain out of the water due to a High Rip Current Risk and a High Surf Advisory.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Melbourne FL issued this alert today, September 26, at 3:08 AM EDT. The High Rip Current Risk is in effect through late Sunday night, September 28, and includes dangerous rip currents. The High Surf Advisory, which expires at 4 AM EDT this morning, warned of large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet in the surf zone.
These conditions pose a risk of dangerous swimming and surfing, as well as localized beach erosion. Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can sweep individuals away from shore. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating, not swimming against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
