Storm Surge Warning for Baldwin Central: Life-Threatening Conditions Expected
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Baldwin Central, including Daphne, Fairhope, and Foley, with life-threatening storm surge and winds possible; immediate preparations are critical, and residents should shelter in place.
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Baldwin Central, issued today, October 9, at 4:07 AM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL. Residents in Daphne, Fairhope, and Foley are urged to complete all remaining preparations immediately.
Life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, with evacuees in shelters well away from surge flooding. Remaining sheltered in a safe location is critical; do not venture outside. The NWS advises sheltering against life-threatening storm surge greater than 3 feet above ground.
Peak winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 70 mph are expected. However, the potential exists for life-threatening wind of 74 to 110 mph, equivalent to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane. Plan for considerable wind damage, including roof damage, mobile home destruction, and extensive power outages. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, leading to potential major flooding. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and flood control systems could be stressed. Evacuations and rescues are likely, and serious injury or loss of life could occur if actions are not taken. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
The situation is somewhat favorable for a few tornadoes. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate. If a tornado warning is issued, shelter quickly.
This warning is effective until 12:15 PM UTC today. For evacuation and shelter information, contact Baldwin County EMA at 251-972-6807 or visit baldwincountyal.gov/departments/EMA. For storm surge threat graphics and other storm impacts, visit weather.gov/mob.
