Dania Hurricane Season Prep: Get Ready Now

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Dania residents, from the historic Dania Beach Pier area to neighborhoods along the Dania Cut Off Canal, should prepare now to protect family and property.

Proactive steps include signing up for emergency alerts, assembling a hurricane kit, securing homes and planning evacuation routes. Residents should understand the difference between a hurricane watch (possible conditions within 48 hours) and a hurricane warning (expected conditions within 36 hours).

Properties east of the Coastal Construction Line, near the Intracoastal Waterway or on connecting canals are in Special Flood Hazard areas. During flooding, avoid walking or driving through water, stay clear of downed power lines and do not use wet electrical appliances. Secure important documents in waterproof containers and watch for gas leaks.

Home preparations include trimming trees and branches, securing rain gutters, and reinforcing roofs, windows and garage doors. Use generators outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows and doors.

Boat owners should plan to move or store vessels. If keeping boats in canals, double dock lines, use extra anchors, remove unsecured equipment and remove self-furling sails and Bimini tops from sailboats.

Dania is located on a barrier island and within a coastal evacuation zone. Residents and visitors must evacuate when the National Hurricane Center issues a Hurricane Warning for Broward County. During an evacuation, EMS, fire and police will relocate to Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, meaning 911 calls will not be answered within Dania. Carry identification for re-entry, as access may be restricted to unsafe areas.
