Whitfield County Workers Pack 31 Meal Kits for Seniors
Whitfield County employees packed 31 grocery bags with meal kit ingredients for seniors at the Senior Center on Tuesday, April 21. Each bag contains four shelf-stable meals developed by a UGA Extension dietitian to provide balanced nutrition that seniors can store and prepare easily.
The Senior Center serves 150 members daily, with about 46% participating in the free lunch program. "For those seniors, this is the only meal they'll have all day," said Mary Hammontree, Senior Center Director. "They'll eat half at lunch and take the rest home with them."
The Senior Hunger Innovation Grant funds the program, which targets food insecurity among adults 60 and older. Hammontree said grant funds remain for an additional 31 bags to be distributed this week.
