City Urges Residents: Don't Flush 'Flushable' Wipes

The City of Clinton is reminding residents that so called “flushable” wipes should never be flushed down toilets, as they are creating serious and costly problems within the city’s sewer system. Recently, Public Works crews removed a large mass of wipes, grease, and debris from the sewer system after it caused a major obstruction. While many wipes are marketed as “flushable,” they do not break down like toilet paper and can quickly accumulate inside sewer pipes and pump stations. The problem becomes even worse when fats, oils, and grease are poured down household drains. Grease hardens inside pipes and combines with wipes and other debris, forming large blockages that restrict sewer flow and damage equipment. These obstructions can lead to: Sewer backups into homes and businesses Damage to pumps and sewer infrastructure Emergency repairs and maintenance costs Increased strain on the city’s sewer system Repairing this damage is expensive and can ultimately contribute to higher sewer costs over time. The City of Clinton asks residents to help protect the sewer system by following a few simple guidelines: Do not flush wipes, even if labeled “flushable” Do not pour grease, fats, or cooking oils down sinks or drains Only flush toilet paper Residents are encouraged to dispose of wipes in the trash and allow grease to cool before placing it in a sealed container for disposal. Preventing these blockages helps protect city infrastructure, reduce costly repairs, and save money for both taxpayers and homeowners. City Offices Closed Memorial Day; Visit 'Fallen Comrade' Memorial

In observance of Memorial Day, City of Clinton offices will be closed Monday, May 25. Offices will reopen Tuesday, May 26, during regular business hours. As we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, we invite residents to visit the “Fallen Comrade” memorial located at the Clinton Visitor Center. The powerful bronze sculpture tells the story of three childhood friends from Clinton, Waller King, Joe Albritton, and Homer Ainsworth, who served together in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. The memorial depicts Marine Joe Albritton carrying his fallen friend, Homer Ainsworth, from the battlefield so he could be brought home to Clinton and laid to rest on American soil. Created by renowned Mississippi College art professor Dr. Sam Gore and dedicated on Veterans Day in 2012, the sculpture stands as a lasting reminder of friendship, sacrifice, and the cost of freedom. Today, Albritton and Ainsworth are buried just feet apart in Clinton Cemetery, their story forever woven into the history of our community. This Memorial Day, we honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. The post City of Clinton Offices Closed on Memorial Day appeared first on City of Clinton.

Clinton Welcomes $1B AWS Data Center Investment, Largest in City History

The City of Clinton joined representatives from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Hinds County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA), Hinds County representatives, Entergy Mississippi, and regional partners to celebrate a landmark moment in the city’s history: a $1 billion investment that will transform the long-vacant former Delphi manufacturing facility into a state-of-the-art data center. Representing the most significant economic development project in Clinton’s history, the investment breathes new life into a site that has stood largely dormant for years and positions the city as a growing hub for technology infrastructure, innovation, and workforce development in Mississippi. Rather than constructing a new facility from the ground up, AWS is repurposing the former Delphi plant, accelerating the project’s timeline while giving new purpose to an existing industrial asset. The result is a faster path to economic impact for Clinton residents through construction activity, job creation, expanded tax revenues, and long-term private investment. “This is the largest economic development project in the history of Clinton,” said Mayor Will Purdie. “We are proud to welcome AWS to our community and excited about the opportunities this investment will create for our residents, our schools, and future generations of Clinton families.” At full operation, the facility is expected to support at least 100 highly skilled positions, including data center engineers, network specialists, operations managers, and security professionals, while sustaining thousands of additional jobs throughout construction, logistics, manufacturing, and supply chain industries. The impact extends well beyond employment. The investment is expected to generate millions of dollars in new revenue for the City of Clinton, Clinton Public School District, and Hinds County, creating long-term resources to support public services, infrastructure improvements, and educational opportunities. “Today marks a defining moment for Hinds County and the entire Jackson metro region. This investment doesn’t just fill a vacant site; it signals to the world that we are open, competitive, and ready to lead in the digital economy,” said Hunter Gardner, Executive Director of HCEDA. “We have worked hard to build the relationships, prepare the sites, and make the case that Hinds County is the right place to grow, and Amazon Web Services has validated that work in the most significant way possible. This is the largest private investment in Hinds County history, and the benefits — jobs, tax revenue, workforce development, and long-term economic momentum — will help shape the future of our region.” As part of its commitment to sustainable operations, Amazon has pledged to become water positive by 2030, returning more water to communities than its operations consume. That commitment aligns with the company’s broader approach to responsible growth and long-term environmental stewardship in the communities where it operates. The project also highlights the strength of Mississippi’s utility infrastructure and the partnership between AWS and Entergy Mississippi. Entergy Mississippi has worked with Amazon to ensure the company pays all costs associated with serving the facility, including new energy infrastructure and upgrades that strengthen overall grid reliability for customers across the state. Entergy Mississippi recently announced its Fair Share Plus pledge and reported more than $2 billion in customer savings resulting from Amazon’s contributions and other data center agreements. “Amazon’s projects in Mississippi enable us to keep rates 16% lower than they otherwise would have been in 2030 as we construct advanced power plants and make the largest grid upgrade in our 100-year history,” said Jeremy Vanderloo, Vice President, Business Operations and Strategy, Entergy Mississippi. “This project brings tremendous benefits to our state, from jobs and tax revenue to the rehabilitation of this once-vacant property that allows these benefits to be realized sooner than with new construction. We are proud to partner with the Hinds County Economic Development team, Hinds County and City of Clinton leaders, Amazon, Alston, and others who are bringing this project to fruition.” AWS has also partnered with state and local leaders to expand workforce development opportunities across Mississippi, investing in STEM education, fiber optic training, technical certifications, and pre-apprenticeship programs. These efforts are helping create pathways for students and workers to develop the skills needed for high-demand careers in technology and infrastructure, ensuring residents of Clinton and surrounding communities have greater access to quality jobs close to home. “The City of Clinton and Hinds County have shown us exactly what we look for in a partner: strong leadership and a shared commitment to turning opportunity into community prosperity,” said Roger Wehner, Vice President of Economic Development at Amazon Web Services. “We’re proud to bring high-skilled jobs, workforce programs, and long-term investment to this community while breathing new life into a facility ready for its next chapter.” The revitalization of the former Delphi facility represents more than the redevelopment of a vacant property. It reflects continued investment in Clinton’s future, creating opportunities for residents, strengthening local schools and public services, and positioning Clinton as a community where innovation, opportunity, and quality of life go hand in hand. Fourplex Concessions Facility Demolished for Modern Replacement

The City of Clinton has begun demolition of the existing concessions and restroom facility at the Fourplex as part of ongoing Parks and Recreation improvements funded through the 2% Parks and Recreation Restaurant Tax. For many families, athletes, coaches, and visitors, the Fourplex has been the backdrop for countless games, tournaments, and memories over the years. While the existing facility has served the community well, it has reached the point where replacement is the most effective way to meet the needs of today’s park users. The demolition marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Fourplex and will make way for the construction of a modern concessions and restroom facility designed to better serve the thousands of residents and visitors who utilize Clinton’s athletic facilities each year. The project is one of several improvements made possible through the 2% Parks and Recreation Restaurant Tax approved by Clinton voters in 2022. Revenue generated through the tax is dedicated exclusively to Parks and Recreation projects and cannot be used for other city purposes. Since the passage of the 2% tax, the City has completed numerous improvements, including the Towne Park Pickleball Complex, the inclusive playground at Brighton Park, new restroom facilities at multiple parks, and other quality of life enhancements throughout the community. As work continues at the Fourplex, the City looks forward to providing a facility that will better serve athletes, families, tournament visitors, and future generations of park users. Residents can learn more about projects funded through the 2% Parks and Recreation Restaurant Tax by visiting clintonms.org/2percent. A Special Election to renew the 2% Parks and Recreation Restaurant Tax will be held on June 9, 2026. Pinehaven Bridge Reopens After 13 Months of Construction

After more than a year of construction, the Pinehaven Bridge is now officially open to traffic. The bridge replacement project, which began in April 2025, involved the complete reconstruction of the bridge crossing Bogue Chitto Creek. The new structure was designed to improve long-term safety, increase reliability, and provide a stronger transportation connection for residents and motorists traveling through the area. The project required the closure of Pinehaven Drive for approximately 13 months while crews removed the aging bridge and constructed a new, modern replacement. Throughout the project, residents navigated detours and changing traffic patterns as construction progressed. The completed bridge is taller and wider than the previous structure and was built to better withstand future flooding events while providing a safer route for daily travel. City officials recognize the inconvenience the closure created for residents, businesses, and commuters who rely on Pinehaven Drive. The City appreciates the patience and understanding shown by the community throughout the duration of the project. The reopening of the bridge marks the completion of one of the City’s most significant infrastructure projects in recent years and restores a critical connection between neighborhoods on both sides of Bogue Chitto Creek. The City of Clinton thanks residents for their continued support as infrastructure improvements are made to enhance safety and mobility throughout the community. City of Clinton Announces Spring Citywide Cleanup

" The City of Clinton will host its annual Spring Citywide Cleanup from April 25 through May 2, 2026, providing residents with a free and convenient opportunity to dispose of yard waste, bulky items, and other household debris. The site will be closed on Sunday, April 26. Dumpsters will be available at the former Northside Elementary School, located at 1111 Old Vicksburg Road, and will operate daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. City employees will be on site throughout the week to assist residents as needed. To help ensure a smooth and safe process, residents are asked to line up on Longwood Place in the Briars and turn west onto Old Vicksburg Road when entering the disposal site. Due to the cost of the program, this service is limited to City of Clinton residents only. Proof of residency will be required and may be verified with a City of Clinton water or garbage bill, or a driver’s license or state-issued identification card with a Clinton address. The cleanup is intended to help residents clear out unwanted materials at no cost, but certain items will not be accepted. These include electronic waste such as computers, printers, and keyboards, as well as refrigerators, freezers, or air conditioning units that contain freon. For additional information, residents may contact the Public Works Department at 601-924-2239. The post Spring Citywide Cleanup Scheduled for April 25 – May 2 appeared first on City of Clinton."
