Coastal Wakulla County residents, including those in Saint Marks and Panacea, must immediately prepare for life-threatening storm surge flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee has issued a Storm Surge Watch, effective today, October 7, at 11:04 AM EDT, indicating the potential for 3-5 feet of inundation above ground in surge-prone areas. This threat is possible within the next 48 hours, with the window of concern spanning Friday morning until Saturday morning.
A Tropical Storm Watch is also in effect, with peak winds of 10-15 mph and gusts up to 30 mph expected, but a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Significant impacts are possible from storm surge, including damage to buildings near the coast, washed-out roads, and major beach erosion. Moderate rainfall of 3-6 inches is also forecast, potentially leading to moderate flooding. Heed any evacuation orders for your area immediately. Failure to evacuate may result in loss of life.
